Forming of the Government: Civil Protection within the Coalition Contract
Berlin – 28. October. The new Government starts its work today. In the Federal Parliament, the Chancellor, Dr. Angela Merkel, was reelected. Ministers were appointed and inaugurated. The previous head of THW, Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble, changes to the post of Finance Minister. The previous head of the chancellery, Dr. Thomas de Maizière, is the new Federal Minister of the Interior.

Ground-breaking Ceremony for the Centre for Logistics concerning Operations abroad
Mainz – 26. October. The foundation stone for the Centre for Logistics concerning Operations abroad (ZAL) of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) is laid. “Thanks to ZAL, in future THW will be able to execute its operations abroad even more efficiently“, said THW-Vice President, Mr Rainer Schwierczinski, on the occasion of the ground-breaking ceremony today in Mainz. Starting on 1 June 2010 ZAL will become the hub for THW missions abroad. Besides members of the Federal Parliament and of the State Parliament, Mr Peter Büttgen, who, as department head in the Federal Ministry of the Interior, is responsible for THW, also took part in the ceremony.

Drinking Water Supply for Stadtoldendorf
Stadtoldendorf - 22. Oktober. On Tuesday, the water supply in the Lower-Saxon town of Stadtoldendorf near Hameln broke down. Because of the significant contamination of the water, THW was called into action to set up a drinking water purification plant. THW-volunteers made the purification of two water reservoirs of the local supply company possible. At the moment, the reservoirs are being filled with purified water. The reason for the contamination is not yet clear.

German-Italian Cooperation
Rome – 13. October. The cooperation between Italian civil protection and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief has been given a solid foundation. Yesterday in Rome, the department head for Crisis Management and Civil Protection in the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Dr. Manfred Schmidt, and the head of Italian civil protection, Mr Guido Bertolaso, signed a corresponding Memorandum of Understanding.

Earthquake Exercise: International Cooperation for the Rescue of People buried under Rubble
Wesel – October 9. The rescue work after the simulated earthquake in Wesel is being continued. Besides THW units from the Rapid Deployment Unit for Salvage Operations Abroad (SEEBA), also volunteers from the Netherlands, Malta and Great Britain are taking part in the earthquake exercise in “Euphoria”. It is partly financed by the European Commission. Today THW-President, Mr Albrecht Broemme, and representatives of the Federal Ministry of the Interior also got a picture of the international cooperation during the exercise.

Bordering countries: Joint Programme with Luxembourg
Luxembourg – October 9. The Director of the ASS, Mr Michel Feider, and THW President, Mr Albrecht Broemme, on Tuesday signed the joint work programme of the “Administration des services de secours (ASS)” – of the Administration for the Rescue Service in Luxembourg – at the Luxembourg School for Civil Protection in Schimpach. The programme, which is scheduled for two years, stipulates, besides information exchange, joint education, execution of a technology show and of a cross-border exercise.

Earthquake in Sumatra: Help for the Survivors
Bonn/Padang - October 6. Almost one week after the heavy earthquake on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the focus of the aid organisations is shifting more and more to the region around the town of Padang. On behalf of the United Nations, international relief teams have started to explore aid options in areas which are difficult to access. Today three THW expert advisors, accompanied by representatives of UN-OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs), are on their way, specifically to explore relief possibilities in the area of water provision. On behalf of the German Embassy, a THW expert advisor from Jakarta arrived in Padang today. He will support the coordination of the German aid on site and reports directly to the Embassy.

Earthquake in “Euphoria”
Wesel – October 8. On Wednesday, an earthquake of magnitude 6.9 devastated the “Free Republic of Euphoria”. At least, this is the scenario for an operational exercise of the European Union. THW-volunteers of the Rapid Deployment Unit for Salvage Operations Abroad (SEEBA) and a team from Holland are heading for the forest area of Kanonenberge near Wesel.

Earthquake in Sumatra: THW Expert Advisor Team starts Work
Bonn – 3. October. The expert advisor team of five people from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief has started its work in the Indonesian town of Padang, which was destroyed by the earthquake. Their task is to support the UN-coordination teams and also to assess relief options in the fields of water supply and infrastructure. In the capital of Jakarta, another expert advisor gives advice to the German Embassy as to how to coordinate the German aid. In the water laboratory which was taken to the site of the disaster the quality of the drinking water is checked at sample points.

THW-Expert Advisor Team left for Indonesia
Bonn – 2. Oktober. Today a THW-team of five people left for the disaster area with the mission to support the German Embassy in coordinating German relief after the devastating earthquake on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The THW expert advisors from the areas of water supply and infrastructure will first fly to Jakarta in order to explore, together with representatives of the Embassy, further possibilities of German relief measures there.
